Position Summary

The Louisiana Landmarks Society (LLS) seeks an experienced Executive Director to lead the organization’s preservation advocacy, fundraising, membership growth, strategic partnerships, and operations. The Executive Director serves as the chief executive and principal public representative of LLS, working with the Board of Trustees to advance its mission and strengthen its visibility, financial sustainability, and impact throughout New Orleans and Louisiana.

The Executive Director supervises the Pitot House Manager, who is responsible for day-to-day operation and stewardship of the historic Pitot House.

Reports to: Board of Trustees
Supervises: Pitot House Manager and other staff, contractors, and consultants as applicable

Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide overall leadership and management of LLS and work with the Board to establish strategic priorities, annual goals, and organizational direction.
  • Identify opportunities to expand LLS’s influence, membership, partnerships, programs, and financial sustainability.
  • Support effective Board and committee engagement; supervise staff and contractors; and ensure effective organizational administration.

Preservation Advocacy & External Relations

  • Serve as LLS’s principal preservation advocate and spokesperson and work with the Board and Advocacy Committee to establish advocacy priorities.
  • Maintain an informed understanding of preservation issues affecting New Orleans and Louisiana and represent LLS before governmental bodies, community organizations, preservation partners, media, and other stakeholders.
  • Build productive relationships with public officials, preservation professionals, neighborhood and cultural organizations, and community partners.
  • Lead the New Orleans Nine Most Endangered, Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation, and other advocacy initiatives.

Development & Membership

  • Lead fundraising and development efforts, including donor cultivation and stewardship, major gifts, grants, sponsorships, annual giving, and other funding opportunities.
  • Develop strategies to grow and engage LLS membership and expand the organization’s donor base.
  • Provide executive leadership for Fête du Jardin and fundraising for significant Pitot House preservation and capital projects.

 

Financial & Organizational Oversight

  • Develop and monitor the annual budget and maintain oversight of revenue, expenses, cash flow, restricted funds, grants, and overall financial health.
  • Work closely with the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and outside financial professionals to ensure appropriate financial controls, reporting, policies, and nonprofit compliance.

Pitot House Oversight

  • Supervise and support the Pitot House Manager while delegating day-to-day operations to that position.
  • Work with the House Manager, Board, and committees to establish priorities for preservation, maintenance, capital improvements, programming, and use of the property.
  • Ensure the Pitot House supports the broader mission and financial health of LLS.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible nonprofit experience, preferably including leadership, fundraising, preservation, cultural organizations, museums, or advocacy.
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience, including donor cultivation and stewardship, grants, sponsorships, and fundraising campaigns.
  • Strong financial literacy and experience managing organizational budgets; working knowledge of QuickBooks preferred.
  • Experience with CRM or donor-management systems and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of historic preservation and familiarity with New Orleans and Louisiana preservation issues and governmental processes strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit Board and supervising staff, contractors, or volunteers.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, public-speaking, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to attend occasional evening and weekend meetings and events.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time position with an annual salary of $90,000–$95,000, commensurate with experience, plus a benefits package.
