Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President, Development, the responsibility of a Development Officer is to be a leader in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts to the university.  At Loyola University New Orleans, a major gift is defined as a gift with a minimum value of $25,000.  The successful Development Officer will develop and maintain a portfolio of 100 to 125 major gift donors that yields on a regular basis numerous gifts from $25,000 to upwards of $1,000,000.

Examples of Duties

  • Secure gifts of $25,000 to upwards of $1 million through direct cultivation and solicitation of alumni, other individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations.  Develop knowledge of individual donors’ philanthropic dreams and their interests in particular programs and priorities at Loyola University New Orleans and align donors’ wishes with the priorities of the university.
  • With the Division of University Advancement’s research team, qualify alumni, corporations, foundations and friends to determine their capability of extending financial support.
  • Personally solicit funds for university priorities through written proposals.
  • Articulate the Jesuit educational mission of Loyola to prospective donors.
  • Develop and manage a Visiting Committee to support one of Loyola’s five colleges.
  • Work with the Office of Advancement Information Services team and the Assistant Director of Stewardship & Advancement to ensure the acknowledgment of gifts and the reporting on the use of gifts in a timely fashion.
  • Coordinate appeals to individuals with other appeals being made at the University.
  • Provide advice, guidance and training to college or campus staff members for the improvement of their skills in development work, associated areas of alumni relations and communication efforts.
  • Assist in the establishment of specific long-range fund-raising objectives in consultation with University Leadership.
  • Develop fund-raising volunteers from among friends and alumni of the University.
  • Support the work of alumni programs through attendance at alumni events.
  • Coordinate with members of the Alumni Engagement team for activities which support fundraising.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President, Development.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Travel required.
  • Attendance at events on nights and weekends required.

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Minimum of two years of effective experience in fundraising or a related field.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong organizational and management skills. 

  • Ability to handle multiple, on-going projects. 

  • Knowledge of Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, and Excel required.

  • Commitment to Loyola’s Jesuit educational mission.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge and NXT Software
